Abstract

An exchange ranging over the current state of Spinoza studies, centred on Genevieve Lloyd’s engagement with reading his works. Themes discussed include Spinoza’s treatment of reason: its relations with imagination and emotion, and the common assumption that his philosophy can be treated as exemplifying what has come to be known as ‘rationalism’. The exchange also considers the bearing of Spinoza’s philosophy on current understanding of ethical objectivity and contemporary attitudes towards  non-human parts of Nature. More generally, questions are raised about contrasts between ‘past-centred’ and ‘present-centred’ approaches to the practice of history of philosophy.
