Language Policy

The JSS language policy is designed to balance two core values. The first is inclusivity: scholars may submit work written in Dutch, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish. The second is accessibility: published research will be accessible to all scholars with reading knowledge of English.

Details

Papers submitted in English will go through a standard two-step review process: (i) desk assessment and (ii) anonymous review. (see the JSS Review Process).

Papers may also be submitted in Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. To facilitate assessment, these submissions must be accompanied by an abstract written in English. These submissions will go through the first two steps of the review process. If the paper is accepted, then the author will be asked to provide an English translation of the accepted version of the paper. Submitted translations will be checked by native English speakers on the Scientific Community to ensure that the translated prose is clear and idiomatic. JSS is unable to cover the cost of translations.

JSS is committed to adhering to this language policy for a 4-year/8-issue trial period. At the end of the trial period, the policy will be reassessed, and possibly revised, by the Scientific Committee.
